It was a wet weekend, but this week looks like a chance to get us dried out for good planting conditions. I would say there is absolutely no rush to get out into the field, though, until conditions are very good. With the markets the way they are, there's no reason to limit our crop because we rushed to get out into the field in April.
I know it can be tough to sit still - if you feel like you have to be planting, I would suggest planting soybeans. We have seen for many years the advantage of getting soybeans in as early as possible.
Most of our recent corn planting data shows April 25 through May 5 have been the high yield plant dates for corn. No bushel loss has been shown to occur until about May 5. With current genetics and treatments, we see excellent stand development from 45℉ and up. We will likely drop into the low 40’s/upper 30’s for soil temps until late this week - it appears it won’t really warm up until about April 22. I know many said last year they planted into low 40’s and it turned out fine because the conditions were so good. Keep in mind - last year we were at 50℉ shortly after those first couple days of low soil temps.
